PhD: Machine-Learning-Driven Multimodal Control for HRI

A doctoral programme connecting perception, language and control into one framework for human–robot interaction.

University of Brighton · awarded June 2026

System overview

  1. 01Gesture & pose
  2. 02Language
  3. 03Intent
  4. 04Task & trajectory
  5. 057-DoF control
Simplified flow of PhD thesis, following the published description.

The problem

People communicate with a mix of gestures, movement and words. The thesis asks how a collaborative manipulator can accept these channels together, interpret them with machine learning, and still behave predictably and safely.

Approach

  1. 01Perception: vision-based recognition of hand gestures and body pose.
  2. 02Language: LLM-based interpretation of spoken or written instructions, including multilingual input.
  3. 03Control: mapping recognised intent to trajectory generation and execution on a 7-DoF Franka Emika Panda.
  4. 04Evaluation on physical tasks such as pick-and-place, cleaning and beverage preparation.
